I think going for a paper cut-out look is great ;D
Absolutely LOVE the bottom one- but there's something about the top which I'm not so sure about. I think it's something to do with the contrast of the colours in the b/g and the character or something like that... Sorry just not quite sure at the moment. I will stare at it and let you know if I can pinpoint what I'm looking at.
But it is looking better than bourbons. And that's saying something.
I think part of it is the stuff in the foreground. Maybe changing the colour of that? or maybe just getting rid of it? Maybe ask John or Rachel. They're pretty good at spotting things like that. I'm also tempted to suggest making the back wall either more vivid or maybe slightly more pale? these are guesses... I might be completely wrong. I probably am.
